Labanotation - Timing

To give measured timing, the centre line is ticked off into beats. The length used for a beat is kept regular throughout a section. Once the length of a basic beat is established the whole scale of values as in music notation is determined.
It is common practice to establish the length of the basic beat/unit in the starting position.

The length of the basic symbols is then altered to fit the length of time the step or gesture lasts.
